What is Seed Paper

Seed paper is a truly eco-friendly, biodegradable alternative to traditional stationery: it’s paper into which flower, herb, or native seeds are embedded. Once used, instead of ending up in the landfill, you can plant the paper, cover it with soil, water it, and watch it germinate and grow.

Our seed paper is made from post-consumer and post-industrial recycled paper waste, mixed with quality seeds.

Every sheet is unique, because the recycled fibres vary in texture and colour; no two pieces look exactly the same.

Plantable seed paper stationery collections, Australian made cards that grow into something lasting.

Choosing seed paper means choosing a sustainable, living alternative—a card, bookmark, or promotional item that doesn’t just send a message, but becomes part of nature.

How Seed Paper Is Made

The process to make seed paper is artisanal, hands-on, and environmentally mindful.

  • Sourcing recycled paper: We collect post-industrial and post-consumer paper (cardboard, office waste, newspapers) from local centres and recycling sources.

  • Pulverising into pulp: The paper is cleaned, sorted, and broken down into pulp.

  • Infusing seeds: The pulp is poured into a water bath and mixed with the seed variety of the day. Using hand moulds and deckles, each sheet is crafted to embed seeds uniformly without damaging them.

  • Pressing & drying: Excess water is pressed out. Sheets are dried—often outdoors to reduce carbon use—and then pressed again to smooth wrinkles.

  • Cutting & finishing: Once fully dry, the seed paper is cut to the required dimensions for cards, bookmarks, flyers, etc., and prepared for printing.

Throughout, care is taken to keep the seeds viable, ensuring they sprout well after planting.

Printing on seed paper has special considerations, because the embedded seeds must survive the process. Here’s how we handle it:

  • We use water-based inks and always print using ink-jet rather than offset, since rollers in offset printing can crush seeds.

  • Our artwork guidelines include maintaining a 5 mm margin away from cutlines to allow for variation and reduce waste.

  • Double-sided printing is available (for an additional cost), but each side must be clean, legible, and free from over-saturation.

  • All printing is done in-house with careful quality control. We provide a PDF art proof for your approval and, if needed, a physical “make ready” proof before the full run.

Because every stage—from paper-making to printing—is controlled, we can ensure that your seeded cards, bookmarks, or promotional items look great and still germinate.
